![]() Not only did I live and breathe Todd and Viola’s lives for those three days, I insisted on writing a commentary for a friend who had already read the books. ![]() I genuinely could not put this book down – it was that good! Instead, I was thrown back into New Prentisstown with all the drama and imagination that came along with it. Once again, Patrick Ness managed to ruin my life for the three days I spent reading this book. I can’t even begin to describe the emotions I went through whilst reading this book. As the battles commence, how can they hope to stop the fighting? How can there ever be peace when they’re so hopelessly outnumbered?Īn epic ending to an epic trilogy. Whatever you may think of his personal beliefs should not affect the reading of the tale, as it was written to BE a tale. However, the majority of those who actually give this book a chance are more than pleased by the outcome.įirst of all, let me remind readers that Lewis wanted his stories to be, first and foremost, stories. The somewhat colorless covers that the tale is often subjected to do not help matters. Perhaps it is because the book is so often seen as a philosophical/theological work, something scholarly and dense and difficult to read. Among the few, I would guess that there are a significant number feigning ignorance so as not to delve into the pages. Even among those who label themselves as Lewis fans, the work is not often read. Ironically, though Lewis considered this to be his best work, it is not very well known. ![]() ![]() ![]() Western Gothic requires an intense commitment. ![]() It has taken us an average of 4.25 years per book. Not only are we experts in Western Gothic, we’re also pretty good with numbers. Our fourth and final book in the series - The Cowboy and the Vampire: The Last Sunset - will hit the shelves of bookstores on June 9. We wrote the first book - The Cowboy the Vampire: A Very Unusual Romance - in 1999. We’re pretty sure we invented the genre with The Cowboy and the Vampire Collection, a series of four books set in the modern west and featuring sexy, brooding vampires bent on world domination. ![]() So what is Western Gothic? It is a style of fiction that transplants the moody, death-obsessed themes of classic gothic fiction (think Castle of Otranto or, of course, Dracula) to the wide open, inspiring vistas of the modern west ( Riders of the Purple Sage, or All the Pretty Horses). We say that as recognized (by each other) experts in the field of Western Gothic Studies, a field and (and likely a genre) we created, and with all the confidence an exhaustive, seconds-long Google search can bestow (see sidebar). Western Gothic is a fairly narrow but very deep and wildly entertaining literary genre.
